Hungry for News

Winter 2011-12

Feed the Hungry is Feeding Families

Feed the Hungry has seen the need for food in our community increase dramatically over the last several years.  This demand has come because more and more people, who in the past were safe from layoffs, are now seeing their jobs vanish right before their eyes.

The stories we are hearing are different from those we have heard in the past.  People who have never been unemployed and have always had money coming in are now devastated and looking for ways to support and feed their families.

Feed the Hungry Foundation is stepping up and reaching out to help these people.  One of the items we put into each box of food we deliver is a list of agencies in the Atlanta area, their telephone numbers, and the help they can provide. These agencies help our clients find other food pantries, rent and utilities assistance, job training and placement, and prescription drugs assistance.

No one agency can do it all, but with your help and financial gifts, Feed The Hungry Foundation can and will reach out to feed and support the many Metro Atlanta families in need during these difficult times!  Please help as you can!!!

29th Annual Dan Reeves
Feed The Hungry Foundation Golf Classic

The 29th Annual Dan Reeves Feed the Hungry Foundation Golf Classic was a GREAT success. The tournament was held at Bear’s Best Atlanta, and we had almost 100 golfers enjoy great weather and strong competition.  We have already started working on next years event.  More details as they become available.

Golfers and hole sponsors enjoyed playing with former Falcons coach Dan Reeves, and others. Lunch was once again be provided by Pig-N-Chik and 680 the Fan did a live remote from the tournament.   Truly, our big winners are always the families we serve!

Feed the Hungry Foundation’s goal is to help neighbors in a financial bind to meet one of their most basic needs – nutrition.  During 2010, we delivered over 1,000,000 emergency meals into needy homes throughout north Georgia.  Our annual golf tournament is one of our biggest moneymakers and helps us help others.  Isn’t it great to know you can have a GREAT time playing golf, and while you are doing that you are helping others!

Call Mack Barnes at 770-980-1550, extension 17, if you would like to receive more information about the tournament next year

Rev. Mack’s Message

Our Christmas Warehouse program was held on December 12, 13 and 14th.  During that time more than 10,000 food boxes were put together to give to needy families all over North Georgia.  In all more than 40,000 people were touched by our Christmas Program.  While we are a year – round program, a large part of our food boxes (almost half) go out at Christmas.  In 2011 over 21,000 food boxes will be delivered serving over 95,000 people.  This is all done because of the generosity of people like you.  Feed the Hungry Foundation is volunteer driven.  The Foundation only has two employees, so the work of filling the food boxes and delivering them is all done by our GREAT VOLUNTEERS!  Thank you, thank you!

Our country has been going through one of the worst financial times it has had to endure since the great depression of the 20’s and 30’s.  We are told that the recession is over, but it doesn’t feel like it. While the Dow Jones Average of stocks are back to pre “crash” numbers, dividends have been cut and many people who depend on income from their stocks are having to “make do” with a reduced income.

While people who are living off of their stock income are not generally the people who call Feed the Hungry Foundation, they are the people who support it.  2011 was a difficult year for most of us.  Many of the organizations that support the Foundation on an annual basis had to reduce their support, and in several cases were unable to support us at all.  This certainly made for a challenging year.  Our giving was down for the year, but demand for food boxes was up!

The Foundation has improved our web site, I hope you like it.  Please go there and find up to date information about what we are doing.  If you have suggestions, or can help us, please contact me.  We need your help. We are doing God’s work here and know as long as we keep our focus on Him, He will provide.  God has truly blessed this Foundation, and I hope He is blessing you!
